The 10 best SUVs and crossovers 2024
All-wheel drive as the Swiss darling is by no means everything: The trend segment of SUVs from small to XL shines with fast-paced sports versions as well as efficient and electrified drives.
Audi Q4 e-tron
After the Audi E-Tron and E-Tron GT image carriers, the noble Volkswagen subsidiary is now launching an electric car for everyone. The Q4 E-Tron comes as a classic SUV or as a flat coupe called Sportback. And it is based on the VW Group's electric technology toolkit.
This means that in addition to the rear-wheel drive versions with 170 or 204 hp and two batteries for 340 or 520 kilometers, there is also a top-of-the-range all-wheel-drive version. It has an output of 290 hp and can cover up to 488 kilometres. Range anxiety? Passé, because you can fast charge with up to 125 kilowatts of power.
In the interior, it is typical for Audi to be high-class and noble. And via augmented reality, its head-up display projects the navigation system's directional arrows onto the road – the size of a cinema screen.

BMW X5
The larger the SUV, the more it benefits from the environmentally friendly plug-in hybrid drive. BMW's XL SUV X5 thus achieves a range of around 94 km as the xDrive 45e. If you consistently plug the five-seater into the socket in the evening, you can do by far the majority of your everyday journeys purely electrically. After all, we Swiss hardly drive more than 40 kilometers a day.

Dacia Duster
Are you looking for an all-wheel drive vehicle at a budget rate? Then the Dacia Duster is the right choice for you, the SUV with Renault technology that has just been launched in a new generation. After Dacia repositioned itself with a fresh logo, among other things, the prices of the Romanian Renault subsidiary have also risen - but they still rank at the lower end of the Swiss new car market.
Above all, the narrow headlights with new daytime running lights make the retreaded Duster a real eye-catcher. It looks more grown-up, although the external dimensions have remained almost unchanged – and still offers more space thanks to better use of space inside. With a five-metre height allowance, your headroom benefits if you are one of the tall ones. If you can do without all-wheel drive – and who needs it for adventures in the city and agglomerations – you'll also be particularly economical on the road with the new full hybrid drive. With 140 hp of system power, it still gets you ahead quickly.
In terms of interior quality and equipment, Dacia has long been competing with the parent company Renault. In the multimedia system with a ten-inch screen, tilt and incline angles can be displayed off-road. Despite the new drive, the new Dacia Duster still remains easily below the 30,000-franc threshold.

Ford Puma
With the Puma, Ford has conquered the segment of small SUVs for the city in leaps. You have to do without all-wheel drive, but not electrified drives with mild hybridization. The electric motor bridges the speed gaps of the three-cylinder petrol engine. And it recovers energy when braking. For you, this means: Drive fast and save money at the same time.
Despite its compact dimensions, the Puma looks grown-up. The space in the interior even comes close to that of the larger Ford Focus.
A twist in detail: If you don't like the seat covers anymore, they can be easily removed and replaced with a zipper. Thanks to the deep bottom tray in the trunk, you can simply place even large potted plants upright in it. And then pull out the plug in the bottom and simply rinse with water.

Hyundai Tucson
Hyundai's Tucson brings light to the crossover segment with festive lighting in its eye-catching front. The days of friendly but bland design of yesteryear are definitely over at the South Korean carmaker.
Inside, however, you will feel right at home – practicality instead of extravagance. But in the details, the spacious five-seater surprises. For example, with its side cameras instead of normal blind spot warnings: They show in the instrument monitor when something is moving next to the car.
In addition to the diesel versions, Hyundai has also electrified the gasoline engines all around. Either mild via 48-volt on-board electrical system, as a classic hybrid or as a plug-in hybrid for recharging at the socket. As a lamppost parker, you are best served with the normal hybrid. It always flows with you without you having to plug it in in the evening.

Thanks to the MBUX multimedia system, your GLC also listens to your word and regulates the air conditioning, sunroof or destination entry into the navigation system by voice command. So that you can concentrate fully on driving. But in traffic jams, the GLC takes care of stopping and starting for you.

Toyota RAV4 PHEV
The first Toyota RAV4 once co-founded the SUV segment. The Japanese hybrid specialist is now also relying on recharging at the socket for the current generation. With its plug-in hybrid drive for around 75 kilometers of purely electric driving, it becomes the most powerful RAV4 of all time.
The all-wheel drive also makes its contribution to savings. Instead of a mechanical 4×4, the rear axle is electrically driven. This means that it only switches on automatically when you really need it.
The five-seater, styled according to European taste, focuses fully on comfort for long distances. The supple chassis and special insulating glass contribute particularly to this. You only have to limit yourself in the trunk. The necessary battery takes up about 60 liters of its volume. But you should get over that.

Volvo EX30
- Antrieb: Elektro, 300 kW/408 PS
- Kofferraum: 452–1’328 l

VW Tiguan
The VW Tiguan is a real bestseller in the Volkswagen range and a kind of car for every occasion. Just now, a new generation has just been launched on the market in Switzerland. With mild hybrids and plug-in hybrids for recharging at the socket, it offers numerous electrified drives.
But there are also two classic turbodiesels with impressively low consumption – still a reasonable alternative for frequent drivers with limited options for charging a battery. Which, thanks to the stricter emission standards and remeasurements, are nevertheless environmentally friendly in everyday operation.
If you take the diesel top version of the spacious five-seater with 193 hp, there is even all-wheel drive on top. There is also full networking via a 12.9 large touchscreen. But VW has learned from criticism of its electric models – there are now real buttons in the steering wheel again instead of touch surfaces that adjust at the mere touch. And the sliders, which control temperature or volume with a swipe of the finger, are finally illuminated.
Optimised in detail and with a convincing concept: In the Tiguan you and your family are well on the road.

Alfa Romeo Tonale
Alfa Romeo did not exactly make it easy for the brand fans. For years, the traditional brand was in the background in the Fiat Group – no new models, only minimal revisions of the existing ones. But then it unveiled the Tonale at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show and three years later, the long-awaited compact SUV finally comes onto the market.
The years were used: CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato did not let up until the plug-in hybrid strengthened to 280 hp. And the design with Alfa crest in the front and narrow headlights also ties in with the brand's glorious past.
Technically, the Alfa is now also rolling into the modern era with finally contemporary infotainment and hybridization even in the basic versions. As a plug-in hybrid, it even rolls 60 kilometers purely electrically.
Are you looking for Italianita in style instead of a mere means of transport? Then the Tonale should be just right. The luggage compartment, which is huge for the vehicle class, and the admiring glances in road traffic are added as standard.
